Morning Mattress Work
With Upton Sinclair & Ishmael Claxton
I think the long arc of human history was like our childhood. We were playful, cruel, innocent and we believed in magic. Now, as we move into adolescence we're starting to understand and recognize our actions. The consequences. Like the deep pain we caused the natural world. Its fragility that we hold in our hands. The Birds Nest. A site-specific art installation by Artist David Tully. In association with the OPW / Heritage Ireland. Open during park hours. October 17th to January 2025. There is a small catch though! You'll have to find it.
The Median
2 weeks later, when I passed this spot again. Realised that they're actually living on the grass median strip at an intersection. I then noticed their tent behind the foliage. The raw coldness reminded me of LA. In a way this is honest for people to see. Homelessness is a condition of society not the individual.

Could'nt believe what I was seeing
This says everything to me about institutions, institutional art, institutionalized artists and true artists. In a nutshell this photo is Sociology. The study of human systems and behaviours. For context. I was returning from the art store and noticed all these people painting an old building. What stopped me was the homeless person right next to them. Now these guys are just a little painting group, look semi-retired, enjoying an art related activity/hobby. More power to them. But what's alien, is how unrelated to actual real art this is. You can see how being part of a programme their attention is directed. Controlled. Even if it is an exercise. This is how institutions and groups function. Which is about conformity and control. This is not inherently evil. It's just not art. An artist doesn't come from this place. An artist isn't manufactured. Like a dentist or like an art collage. It's about freedom. To see and react with anything infront of you. I showed my friend the photo, she joked and said "the homeless guy is probably the real artist that didn't make it into class". Next day I thought, shes not really my friend. She was always just to beautiful.
